Ice Dams Start Inside the House
Attic Insulation & Ice Dam Control is the job most Traverse City homeowners call about after a hard winter. Ice dams form when heat from the house warms the roof deck and melts the snow on it. The water runs down to the cold eaves, freezes, and builds a ridge of ice that backs water up under the shingles. With the city's climate table listing about 101.4 inches of snow a year, the conditions for ice dams are there every winter.
The real cause
Most of the heat that reaches the roof deck is warm air leaking through the attic floor, not heat conducted through thin insulation. Openings around plumbing vents, chimneys, wiring, light fixtures, bath fans, the attic hatch and the tops of interior walls let house air rise into the attic. Sealing those openings is the most important step; adding insulation without sealing them leaves the problem in place.
The target depth
Grand Traverse County is in Climate Zone 6A. The Department of Energy recommends R-60 for an attic with no insulation in this part of the country, or adding R-49 over 3 to 4 inches. After sealing, we install baffles at the eaves so air can still move under the roof deck, then blow cellulose or fiberglass to depth and leave depth markers so you can check it.
Vaulted ceilings and lofts
Vaulted ceilings, lofts and story-and-a-half houses are where ice dams are hardest to fix, because there is little room between the ceiling and the roof. In those spots, closed-cell foam in the rafter bays, or dense-pack where the ceiling stays closed, gives the most R-value and the best air seal in the space available.
Heat cables and roof rakes
Heat cables and roof rakes deal with ice dams after they form. They can help in a pinch, but they do not stop the heat loss that causes them. Fixing the attic usually reduces or ends the need for them.
Rebates
Traverse City Light & Power's 2026 list includes $100 per 500 square feet of roof or attic insulation and $50 per 100 square feet of kneewall. Consumers Energy customers can check its attic rebate amounts, which depend on the final R-value.

Attic Insulation & Ice Dam Control Questions
Will sealing the attic stop my ice dams?
In most homes, sealing and insulating the attic floor removes the heat that causes them. Roof shape and ventilation matter too, and we check both.
Do I need to remove old attic insulation?
Only if it is wet, moldy, contaminated or in the way of sealing. Dry insulation can stay under the new layer.
Blown-in or spray foam in the attic?
For an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually better value. Foam fits vaulted ceilings and attics with ductwork or living space.
How long does an attic job take?
Usually one to two days, including sealing.
