The Region's Biggest Township
Spray Foam Insulation in Garfield Township covers the newer homes, condos and older houses that make up the largest municipality in northern Lower Michigan. The township had 19,499 residents at the 2020 census, up 19.9% from 16,256 in 2010. It was organized in 1853 as Traverse Township, renamed Garfield in 1882 and became a charter township in 1977.
Where it sits
Garfield wraps around the south and west sides of Traverse City, which was once part of the township. The Boardman River and Kids Creek flow north through it, Silver Lake is its largest lake, and Cherry Capital Airport is next door. US 31 and M-37 run through it together.
Newer homes
Much of the township's housing has been built in the last few decades. Those homes usually have attics close to the code of their year but rim joists that were never sealed, bonus rooms over garages, recessed lights and attic hatches that leak. Closed-cell foam on the rim and under bonus-room floors plus attic sealing are the usual jobs.
Older homes and Silver Lake
Older houses closer to the city and around Silver Lake have the same issues as city homes: thin attics, bare rims and empty walls. Kratochvil's Plat was once a resort community on Silver Lake.
Zone 6
Grand Traverse County is in Climate Zone 6A. The Department of Energy recommends R-60 for an empty attic or adding R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.
