A Fishing Village Between Two Lakes
Spray Foam Insulation in Leland covers older homes and cottages in a village that sits on an isthmus between Lake Leelanau and Lake Michigan, with the Leland River running between them. Leland was settled in 1853, and in 1854 Antoine Manseau, his son and John Miller built a dam and sawmill that raised the water level by 12 feet.
Fishtown
Commercial fishermen worked out of the harbor as early as 1880, and up to eight powered tugs once sailed from Fishtown. The Fishtown Preservation Society now owns the historic settlement and two fish tugs. Leland was also the Leelanau County seat from 1883 to 2004.
Exposure
With Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Leelanau on the other, homes here get wind and damp air from both. Older cottages often sit on crawl spaces or piers. Closed-cell foam on the rim and crawl space walls, or under the floor if the space stays open, keeps them drier and warmer.
Small community
Leland had 410 residents at the 2020 census, up 8.8% from 377 in 2010. Many homes are seasonal, so we schedule foam work for when they are empty.
Zone 6
Leelanau County is in Climate Zone 6A. Attics should reach R-60 if empty, or R-49 added over existing insulation.
Historic district care
Homes near the historic Fishtown area deserve careful work. Attic, crawl space and rim insulation are out of sight, and walls can be dense-packed from inside so the outside of an older building looks unchanged.
